This world is made by two dimensions which have become one, as a mirror.
The first dimension is where the humans live, called "Assiah", the other dimension is the demons world, "Gehenna".
Normally, any travel or any contact between both of this dimensions is impossible. However, demons can pass to the humans world possessing  anything that exists on it. Satan is the God of the demons, but, he doesn't have a vessel in the human world powerful enough to hold him. For this purpose he had a child with a woman. Okumura Rin, is a normal boy, living in a convent in Assiah, until the day that he discover that  he is a hybrid, half human, half demon, son of Satan. In that day, he discover about the blue flames, "blue flames is the mark of Satan", Satan was trying to bring him to the demons world and because Rin didn't Accepted his decision, Satan killed the man that Rin considered his true father, a priest of a church, possessing him. but the true is that Rin is not the only Satan son, he has a twin brother, and now, both of them will try to be an exorcist to kill Satan, the God of the demons.
